Žito is a modern food company whose roots reflect a rich and successful history. It has been highly successful in introducing the latest trends through modern production technologies and revolutionary marketing approaches.

The beginnings of Žito date back to 1947, when on December 2, 1947, the government of the People’s Republic of Slovenia established the trading company Žito Ljubljana. It was initially focused on milling activities, but soon expanded into bakery and pasta production.

At the end of 1976, the company Pekarne Ljubljana began preparing frozen food and was the first in the country to offer organic bran, which became a true market success.

In the 1990s, the company underwent several modernization phases. New bakeries were built, and many retail locations were equipped with ovens for additional baking of bakery products.

Investment in technological modernization has been a constant for Žito. Two important investments in 2013 were a new production line for baking bread and bakery products, as well as a cold storage facility for storing products at the PC bread and bakery plant in Maribor.

In 2015, Podravka d.d. acquired the majority of publicly traded shares, i.e. an 86.8% ownership stake in Žito. The sale of the company to the Croatian company Podravka marked the beginning of a more ambitious regional growth story.
